{"id":1145,"date":"2021-05-02T20:03:54","date_gmt":"2021-05-02T18:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aviationadvocacy.aero\/blog\/?p=1145"},"modified":"2021-05-03T12:09:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-03T10:09:12","slug":"that-was-the-week-that-was-26-30-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aviationadvocacy.aero\/blog\/?p=1145","title":{"rendered":"That Was The Week That Was 26-30 April"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Zoom Calls and Bookcases \u2013 Aviation Novels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the only good thing about Zoom calls is the tiny window they can give you of other people\u2019s book cases.&nbsp; Is there anything more fascinating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of calls involving those in aviation seem to have model aeroplanes and engines in the background, and there are more than a few with very worthy arrays of textbooks covering various bits of aviation and a lot of studies of fascinating and well-told aspects of the industry.&nbsp; There are also books written by pilots.&nbsp; Soon, those shelves will no doubt also be adorned by a new book, <em>Come Fly the World<\/em>, by Julia Cooke about Pan-Am\u2019s hostesses (no other term is appropriate) which in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/72b236c9-c36e-4ce3-8ac8-b13f904a948c\">review for the FT<\/a> Peggy Hollinger, of our parish, calls a sexism-skewering history that shows that female flight attendants were \u2018flag-flying diplomats\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, in the same pages of reviews, there was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aa3c4155-0c7b-45fa-9d44-6a8c599b6497\">a review of a novel<\/a> linking an early aviatrix and an actor that is set to play her in a bio-pic.&nbsp; Maggie Shipstead\u2019s <em>Great Circle<\/em> sounds much more suitable for these days of reflection and, assuming a summer holiday, some time on a beach.&nbsp; It goes without saying that I am yet to read it, but it joins a much shorter and much, much more interesting list of books about aviation \u2013 fiction.&nbsp; Novels are magical.&nbsp; You can finish a novel, not remember a word from it, and yet it will change your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So where does your aviation novel collection go?&nbsp; Let me give you a brief view of my curated for Zoom bookcase.&nbsp; All well-stocked libraries, in my opinion, must have the following six novels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Baltasar and Blimunda by Jose Saramago<\/li><li>Catch 22 by Joseph Heller<\/li><li>Illywacker, by Peter Carey<\/li><li>Levels of Life by Julian Barnes<\/li><li>Night Flight by Antoine Saint-Exup\u00e9ry<\/li><li>Trans-Atlantic by Colum McCann<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What have I missed here?\u00a0 What else should be on this list?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me know&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zoom Calls and Bookcases \u2013 Aviation Novels Perhaps the only good thing about Zoom calls is the tiny window they can give you of other people\u2019s book cases.&nbsp; Is there anything more fascinating?
