As we note from time to time, our humble weekly column That Was The Week That Was takes its name from perhaps the first political satire TV programme in the world, broadcast in the early 1960s, by the BBC. It opened each week with a song, the structure of which did not change, but the contents were amended to reflect the week\u2019s news. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As was the case last year, here is the year, the year that was, in review, in revue style…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s over, let it go.

It started at the \u2018new normal\u2019 but finished well below…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We now know the alphabet Greek
But of Nu and Xi
It is best not to speak\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
January started as January might,
At the new normal, and not much flight.
We battled second waves and stayed inside
We prayed that the vaccine would make this subside
Or at least we hoped it would be good for cargo\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first quarter was vaccines.
The hope of the world, we said to our screens
As Zoom supplanted our flying machines.
But as the science advanced, we looked ever more keen
For recovery and for shoots that were green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was the year that was,
It\u2019s over, let it go.

It started at the \u2018new normal\u2019 but finished well below…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We now know the alphabet Greek
What comes after Omicron we dare not speak\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then came the summer, and what we hoped was some light,
Vaccine rollouts might put things to right.
Turned out our optimism was in a fight
Against border police, who, at any time might
Pull down a barrier and give airlines a fright. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prospects looked good, the forecasts were up
Our masks were even starting to slip.
But viruses allow us no space for slips-up
Delta arrived and things started to dip
Carry on! screamed the industry \u2013 let it rip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s over, let it go.

We now know the alphabet Greek
Pi comes after Omicron: that may be quite bleak\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By autumn we realised the new normal was shot
The new new normal was the best of the lot.
But building back better is not what we want.
We want to build back the same, so we can flaunt
The taxpayers\u2019 money \u2013 what a great honey pot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First Delta then Omicron, this virus cannot be sated,
So we line up for boosters, long-awaited
At least in the first world, hoping the virus has not again mutated.
But the simple truth cannot be contemplated
No-one is safe until everyone is vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
