{"id":1410,"date":"2022-11-07T09:47:36","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T07:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aviationadvocacy.aero\/blog\/?p=1410"},"modified":"2022-11-07T09:47:36","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T07:47:36","slug":"that-was-the-week-that-was-31-october-04-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aviationadvocacy.aero\/blog\/?p=1410","title":{"rendered":"That Was The Week That Was 31 October \u2013 04 November"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Qantas Wins Big Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greetings from Sydney, where your correspondent is currently watching the world go past.&nbsp; The big aviation news in Australia this week, the week that was, centred on Qantas.&nbsp; There were two items of interest, and in the way of such things, there are of course connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Qantas held its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qantasnewsroom.com.au\/speeches\/remarks-from-chairman-richard-goyder-agm-2022\/\">annual general meeting<\/a>, and the CEO, Alan Joyce was awarded a AUD$4,000,000 bonus, mostly as shares.&nbsp; So, you might think that things were going very well, and that everything was going well indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, well, not so much it seems.&nbsp; Because Choice, the long-standing and highly regarded Australian consumer magazine, awarded Qantas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choice.com.au\/shopping\/consumer-rights-and-advice\/your-rights\/articles\/2022-shonky-winners\">a Shonky Award<\/a>.&nbsp; This is not a good thing.&nbsp; Qantas shared the podium with a loan shark and a dodgy chicken meat provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those not familiar with the rich and colourful thing that is Australian English, first, commiserations.&nbsp; Secondly, to be shonky is not a good thing.&nbsp; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=shonky\">Urban Dictionary<\/a> defines \u2018shonky\u2019 to mean \u2018of poor or low quality\u2019.&nbsp; Qantas were as gracious as you might expect when this was announced, noting that their metrics were improving, so there.&nbsp; Well, awards are not normally awarded prospectively, but for past performance, or lack of performance in this case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice did not pull any punches, describing Qantas, which tags itself as \u2018the Spirit of Australia\u2019 as \u2018The Spirit of Disappointment\u2019.&nbsp; Still, the Australian aviation market being what it is, consumers are given little choice and high costs.&nbsp; Shareholders obviously agree with the strategy Qantas is pursuing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in the words of a former Australian airline, TAA (now part of Qantas), it is up, up and away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Qantas Wins Big Award Greetings from Sydney, where your correspondent is currently watching the world go past.&nbsp; The big aviation news in Australia this week, the week that was, centred on Qantas.&nbsp; There were two items of interest, and in the way of such things, there are of course connected.
