{"id":816,"date":"2018-04-27T17:00:21","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T15:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aviationadvocacy.aero\/blog\/?p=816"},"modified":"2019-07-23T11:43:16","modified_gmt":"2019-07-23T09:43:16","slug":"that-was-the-week-that-was-23-27-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aviationadvocacy.aero\/blog\/?p=816","title":{"rendered":"That Was The Week That Was:  23 \u2013 27 April"},"content":{"rendered":"In last month\u2019s <em>Aviation Intelligence Reporter<\/em> we spent some time discussing if we are now at peak trade association.\u00a0 Increasingly, we are seeing single issue groupings address particular concerns.\u00a0 Often these staffed by lobbyists and public affairs staff of companies with clients in many sectors.\u00a0 So the question is what can the bricks and mortar, real live membership organisations do for us?\u00a0 IATA is determined to show that they add value by touring the world preaching the value of standards.\u00a0 <!--more-->This week, they were in Doha, and on <strong>Monday<\/strong>, at their annual ground handling conference their VP for Airports, Passengers, Cargo and Security, Nick Careen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atn.aero\/#\/article.html?id=67640\">focused on three things<\/a>: global standards, increased collaboration and new technology.\u00a0 That is fine, except they are self-contradictory.\u00a0 There is no need for collaboration if everyone is applying standards, and new technologies will call for new standards, so the old ones are otiose.\u00a0 If there wasn\u2019t an IATA, someone would invent one.\u00a0 IATA is the keeper of interlining, one of the greatest pieces of industrial engineering the world has ever seen, but it needs to think through its messaging.\r\n\r\nBy <strong>Tuesday<\/strong> the excitement of the ground handling conference was fading, but ICAO was at the World Travel and Tourism Council summit in Buenos Aires, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atn.aero\/#\/article.html?id=67655\">extolling the virtues<\/a> of safe and secure travel to the development of aviation.\u00a0 If IATA\u2019s message on Monday was self-contradictory, Dr Fang Lui\u2019s was self-evident.\u00a0 A good test of the robustness of a particular statement is to test it in reverse.\u00a0 Imagine ICAO\u2019s message the other way around.\u00a0 Unsafe and insecure travel is not likely to encourage travel.
