15 June"},"content":{"rendered":"June is aviation trade association AGM month.\u00a0 IATA held theirs in Sydney the week before; CANSO followed up in Bangkok on <strong>Monday<\/strong> and <strong>Tuesday.\u00a0 <\/strong>The theme was data and how it might change things.\u00a0 For an independent observer on the \u2018summit\u2019 CANSO held on the Monday, it would seem that there is strong support for using email as an alternative to having to source goose feathers to make quills when you want to send a letter.\u00a0 Perhaps the delegates were so put off by the first presentation, from a CAPA economist that showed how unhelpful a bucket of data is with no intelligence applied to it.\u00a0 Picking up on that lazy lack of thought, the rest of the meeting talked data, not wisdom.\u00a0 What was missing was any look beyond how data can do things quicker.\u00a0 It might mean we can stop doing some things, or do things differently.\u00a0 That was one of the two elephant in the room: the conference logo was an elephant, suggesting that CANSO does have a sense of humour after all.\u00a0 But the real elephant is that data does not respect national boundaries.\r\n\r\nAnother elephant is that aviation is really part of tourism.\u00a0 The tourism agenda is as important as the airlines\u2019. \u00a0Tourism\u2019s ICAO, the UNWTO, <a href=\"http:\/\/media.unwto.org\/press-release\/2018-06-13\/innovation-and-digitalization-top-european-tourism-agenda\">met<\/a> on <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>.\u00a0 What is on top of its agenda?\u00a0 Digitalisation.\u00a0 Or to use their words, \u2018to create an ecosystem of government policies, funds and strategic projects that nurture disruptive ideas and entrepreneurship.\u2019\u00a0 Got to love the way \u2018funds\u2019 is snuck in there.\u00a0 Tax is perhaps the greatest elephant of all, so it is no mystery that New Zealand, the world centre of pomposity-bursting, pretention-busting and go-forward truth-telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/jun\/15\/new-zealand-tourist-tax-to-exempt-australians\">introduced<\/a> this week a tax on tourists, to pay for infrastructure.\u00a0 Probably not the funding the UNWTO had in mind.\u00a0 Still, they probably think, it is New Zealand, not a member of the UNWTO in any case.\r\n\r\nUnlike taxes (unless you are American), data does not respect national boundaries.\u00a0 Neither does air traffic control.\u00a0 National strikes have international implications and Ryanair was keen to point out that further strikes are going to have significant implications.\u00a0 Michael O\u2019Leary was his usual reticent self on <strong>Thursday<\/strong> when he got out on the front foot against another round of French strikes.\u00a0 When O\u2019Leary is about, it is a brave elephant that tries to remain quietly in the room.\u00a0 What CANSO refused to face was that digitalisation might mean that the controllers\u2019 jobs are going to be, at best, different.\r\n\r\nSo there can be no doubt that data is part of the future.\u00a0 And it needs to be.\u00a0 The European network calculated the amount of hours of delay the European ATM network would suffer this year \u2013 to make the number totally meaningless they reduce it to minutes per flight.\u00a0 Apparently your flight will, on average, suffer a 1.36 minute delay.\u00a0 Tell that to someone delayed for three hours.\u00a0 That is like the statistician with one foot on a block of ice and one in a bucket of boiling water \u2013 on average she is fine.\u00a0 But here is the thing \u2013 by this week, the system has used all of the anticipated delay minutes \u2013 for the entire year.\u00a0 The summer peak is ahead of us.\u00a0 That is why on <strong>Friday <\/strong>Eurocontrol started to warn people.\u00a0 Bad news being hard to digest, they attempted to do it funny \u2013 brave call \u2013 with a lapse into George Gershwin.\u00a0 \u2018Summertime\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurocontrol.int\/news\/summertime-%E2%80%A6-and-traffic-growing-airports-busy-and-delay-could-be-high-%E2%99%AA\">Eamonn Brennan crooned<\/a>, channelling his inner Ella Fitzgerald, \u2018and the traffic is growing.\u00a0 Airports are busy and delays could be high\u2019.\u00a0 As high as an elephant\u2019s eye.\u00a0 There is that elephant again, getting into rooms around the world.\u00a0 Maybe Eurocontrol should consider changing its logo.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June is aviation trade association AGM month.\u00a0 IATA held theirs in Sydney the week before;
